HCA Dance + Theatre's approach to observational and hands-on learning for grades K-8 connects with the Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum. The fundamental concept of children performing for children will spark students' imaginations and bring the curriculum to life! Through our day-long field trips, students learn about history, geography, different cultures and nature via hands-on arts experiences.

Each field trip experience is based on expectations listed in The Ontario Curriculum: The Arts, and story themes are linked to Social Studies curriculum.

"I have used some of the techniques that HCA Dance + Theatre taught in our class (field trip) last year. Now, I go online and search how to make new and innovative things. I've been getting more and more excited about bringing art to the classroom. The way that your instructors broke it down, it made me realize that I could apply it as well!"

HOW IT WORKS

Students will begin their field trip experience in the HCA Black Box Theatre, which is equipped with a stage, lighting and sets, transporting participants into the story they will be exploring. A quick “synopsis” of the story is told after which the group of students breaks into two groups – Group A and Group B.

Group A remains in the theatre, where they work on the telling of the story through drama, dance and music. The children will have the opportunity to work with different musical instruments, dress up in costumes, and perform the story through the performing arts.

Group B will travel from the theatre to our Children’s Art Studio to work on a curriculum-linked visual arts project. These projects allow students the opportunity to explore a variety of mediums and techniques in painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture related to their field trip theme.

At the end of the morning, both groups will congregate in the theatre, where the children will share with one another what they have experienced, and Group A will perform.

Following a lunch break, the two groups will swap for the duration of the afternoon. All children attending this hands-on experience will have the opportunity to engage in all of the arts, all day.

Note on accessibility:

The limitations imposed upon us by budget constraints and historic building design mean we cannot provide the accessibility we would like at this time; however we are working on methods to better serve patrons with all manner of disabilities and special needs. Please note that the activities in our field trips currently require travel between different floors of our building, with stairs as the only access point to these studios. If you’d like to discuss accommodation for students with different needs, please contact us at 905-528-4020.
